La Défense
Paris La Défense or La Défense is the western business district of Paris.
This district is not part of so-called Paris intra-muros (the modern Paris of Haussmann) but shared between the two suburban towns of Puteaux and Courbevoie in the Hauts de Seine departement (N°92). There is a joke saying that people living in Hauts de Seine are "des fils de Garche et des enfants de Puteaux" (not to be translated).
The name of La Défense (defence) came from a Memorial dedicated to Parisians defenders during franco-prussian war of 1870 when Paris was besieged.
It was created as a semi-public entity in 1958. The first skyscraper was build in 1966.
